Mobile ULEZ Cameras Deployed to Combat ‘Blade Runners’ Amidst 29th August ULEZ Expansion Across All London Boroughs

In a strategic move to counteract the widespread vandalism of fixed ULEZ cameras by groups known as ‘Blade Runners’, Transport for London (TfL) has deployed approximately 20 mobile Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) camera vehicles across all London boroughs. This initiative coincides with the expansion of the Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) from 00:01 on 29th August 2023, as revealed to ULEZ.co.uk.

TfL stated, “There will be approximately 20 mobile camera vehicles that will operate and enforce inside the ULEZ area. It is anticipated that these vehicles will be agile in their locations and will operate across any boroughs on a day-to-day basis.”

Initially introduced in April 2019, the ULEZ covered the same area as the Congestion Charge Zone. However, starting tomorrow, the zone will encompass all London boroughs, a significant expansion aimed at reducing air pollution by discouraging the use of highly polluting vehicles.

The mobile ANPR cameras will supplement the existing fixed cameras, which have been operational since the ULEZ’s inception. “The mobile cameras provide more flexibility and allow us to monitor areas not covered by the fixed cameras or where they have been damaged,” the source explained.

Calibrated to accurately capture number plates in all weather conditions, both day and night, the ANPR cameras are equipped with advanced technology that distinguishes between ULEZ-compliant and non-compliant vehicles. This ensures only vehicle owners failing to meet ULEZ standards receive a Penalty Charge Notice (PCN).

The ULEZ charge applies 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, except on Christmas Day. Vehicle owners can check their ULEZ compliance by visiting the TfL website or ULEZ.co.uk

TfL hopes that the ULEZ expansion, coupled with the deployment of mobile ANPR cameras, will not only improve air quality across the city but also deter vandalism of the fixed cameras, thereby contributing to the fight against climate change.
